In the winter months we are prone to getting colds, dry skin conditions and infections due to a lowered immune system and so we need a diet rich in winter fruits and vegetables, which are at their nutrition peak.
Mother nature has a wonderful way of providing us with the foods we need each season to ensure our wellbeing.
Foods that are in season (grow in their natural seasonal cycle) have the most nutritional value and flavour and therefore provide our bodies with the greatest nourishment and health benefits to help us prepare for what that season brings. It is important for us to eat foods that are in season to get the best natural health benefits that nature can offer us.
Mother nature provides us with foods like citrus fruits (oranges) and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli that are naturally high in vitamin C which helps support the immune system and may prevent colds and flu.
Not surprisingly, cooked winter vegetables deliver more beta carotene and because they are heated vegetables, it also provides our bodies with warmth in winter. Try roasting vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots as it brings out their flavours.
Hydrate your skin by eating naturally water dense fruits such as grapefruits, mandarins and pears which are seasonal winter fruits. Vitamin C is also known to help produce collagen.
Eggs are high in protein which also helps cell regeneration and contains sulfer and lutein which nutritionist say helps promote skin regeneration and elasticity.
In winter we eat more warming foods including fish chicken, beef, lamb and root vegetables which may help improve circulation and minimise us feeling cold.
In season foods are also usually cheaper and better for us as they grow naturally, in abundance, with very little human interference (no need for pesticides or chemicals) and so contain far less toxins but are at the nutritional peak.
